Most people who buy pickup trucks are interested in the ability to haul cargo easily. Many are farmers, construction workers, movers, or otherwise. But how many times have you been speeding down the highway or interstate only to come up on a pickup truck and realize that the driver has not properly secured the cargo he or she is carrying? Unsecured cargo has been the cause of many fatality and non-fatality accidents, and these accidents were completely preventable.
What is the best way to secure cargo in the bed of a pickup? Here are some tips.
Use a cargo net. For only $60, Isuzu sells a Bed Web Net made of a tough elastic material and designed to stretch. The mount hardware is included and installation is easy. The net keeps cargo from flying out or sliding out of the back even during hard stops or fast turns.
Buy a bed extender. Designed for the Isuzu i-370, the Bed Extender, made of steel, retails for well under $300 and gives pickup owners additional truck bed length. This particular bed extender has the ability to swing in to provide a contained cargo area as well.
Cargo Sports Bags are another option. These are often used in SUVs as well and do an excellent job of keeping smaller items from rolling around or flying out of pickup truck cargo beds.
Use a safety flag or light. Laws differ by state, but many require a red cargo flag or safety light be used when transporting cargo that extends beyond the cargo bed of a pickup. For example, in the state of California, when the load on any vehicle extends at least four feet from the rear of the pickup’s body, the driver must use a fluorescent orange flag, or solid red flag at least twelve inches by twelve inches at the extreme end of the load. In addition, if the vehicle is operating after dusk, there must also be two lighted red lights at the end of the load visible at minimum of 500 feet to the side and the rear of the vehicle for safety.
It’s also important to keep in mind that using these precautions, as well as others will protect the cargo itself. When hauling cargo, it’s important to drive more cautiously than normal and make slow, steady turns. The added weight of your load can make turning more difficult and brakes may not respond as quickly or efficiently as when driving without cargo.

Ford Motor Co. may seem struggling in some auto categories. But the Dearborn-based automaker is doing well in the manufacture of pickup trucks, its bread and butter vehicles. To hold onto its lead in the industry, the automaker seeks to unveil largest and most adaptable motor homes.
The Blue Oval does not sell recreational vehicles under its own name, but Ford is the leading manufacturer of motor home chassis in the United States.
The new chassis truck, made in Detroit, is all about weight. There are six models in the lineup. Based on reports, the biggest has a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,000 pounds.
For the biggest motor homes, the automaker is offering its 6.8-liter Triton V-10, which provides best-in-class performance producing 362 horsepower and 457 foot-pounds of torque. Aside from the superb hauling power, the automaker’s new chassis deliver improved ride and handling, quieter operation and wheels capable of turning up to 50 degrees in either direction.
When the Guthries first approached the automaker, the RV chassis were manufactured in Mexico. With help from the city and the United Auto Workers, who agreed to competitive contract terms, the brothers were able to put together a bid to produce the underbodies in Detroit for less than Ford was paying in Mexico, the report continued.
The commercial truck business is a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle. One of the very big pieces of that puzzle is the motor home industry.
The automaker does not divulge financial results for its motor home venture, but Castelli said Ford produces about 30,000 RV chassis of all classes each year, accounting for about 10 percent of its total commercial truck output. And it is consistently profitable.
The largest models borrow from the F-650 commercial trucks. Castelli said these titans will not only guarantee Ford stays in the lead, but should increase its share even more despite the escalating gasoline price.
As other automakers focus on the enhancement of other auto parts such as engines and shocks, Ford takes the risk of beefing up the chassis.

No one wants to be in an accident with an 18-wheeler. Truck drivers are professionals. They drive all the time and they are some of the best drivers on the road. That doesn’t mean that you should throw caution to the wind and expect everything to be just fine when you are driving around big commercial trucks.
The size and weight of a semi tractor trailer truck makes it hard to maneuver and hard to get back into control once the chain of events leading to an accident gets started. You can substantially reduce your chance of being involved in an accident with a large truck by driving responsibly and by understanding their limitations and what can go wrong.
Equipment failure
No matter how much you trust the driver’s ability, and even when you have the legal right of way, consider this – equipment failure is out of the driver’s hands and honors no laws except the laws of physics.
Tires, brakes, steering components, couplers, axles, turn signals, and horns are just some of the parts that can fail on large trucks. If you’re in the way when equipment fails, you will be hurt or killed.
Trucking laws require regular inspections. Trucking companies do not always comply with inspection schedules and they many fail to maintain their vehicles. Equipment failure can also be the fault of manufacturers or repair shops.
Jackknifing
When a truck folds as the trailer tries to pass the cab, it’s called jackknifing. Many things can cause a truck to jackknife including:
• Brake malfunction
• Sudden braking
• Sudden turning
• Slipper roads
• Uneven road surfaces
• Impact to the truck
Jackknifing caused by malfunctioning brakes often involves a combination of the front brakes locking up and rear brakes failing, causing the cab to stop as the trailer stays in motion. Jackknifing can quickly progress into a deadly rollover accident, involving multiple lanes of traffic and multiple vehicles.
Experienced drivers, and those with proper training, know how to anticipate when another vehicle may have entered a blind spot and the correct procedures to avoid a collision, even though they cannot see all of the perimeters of the truck. Any driver can make a mistake, and you have no way of knowing which trucks are being operated by experienced drivers or if the driver is impaired.
Wide turns
Long trucks have to make wide turns. To do this they swing out to the left before making a right hand turn, taking up two lanes of traffic. In the process they leave an opening to their right. If you pull into that opening, you’re pulling into a blind spot. The truck driver will not be able to see you, and can easily be crushed by the truck as it makes its turn.
Other cars
There is another variable to consider, besides you and the truck driver – all the other drivers. If you see another vehicle behaving unsafely near a big truck, keep you distance. When a truck driver is forced to take sudden evasive maneuvers due to the behavior of other drivers, an accident may result, and you need time to avoid getting caught in the middle of it.

GMC earlier announced its intention to lure the medium duty truck market to go for gasoline engines instead of diesel units. In this regard, the automaker will be renaming a company website that touts medium-duty gasoline engines as an excellent alternative to diesel engines. However, critics in the industry are saying that the strategy seems so strange.
The change of domain name occurred when GM was battling the notion that it is behind the Toyota Motor Corp. and other auto giants with regards to production of eco vehicles. GM launched the website to pump up sales of its medium-duty gasoline engines, which cost anywhere from $6,000 to $15,000 less than its diesel counterparts.
The website gives reasons why people should shift to gasoline engines. For one, gasoline engines cost less than diesel engines. They are also more universally available, easy to service, have fast cab heater warm-up and a good solution for lower-mileage applications. Gasoline engines are also quiet in operation. The site also provides a calculator that suggests how much a customer could save in purchasing a gas engine over a diesel.
GM is capitalizing on the difference to sell more gasoline engines over diesel for commercial trucks. The website touts gasoline engines used in dump trucks, ambulances, some large trucks, and U-Haul moving vans. It also offers potential customers a coffee mug worth $10 if they ask information about gas engines.
GM is currently working in a partnership with other companies like QUANTUM Technologies, Inc. and General Hydrogen to further its engines, strut mount and other auto parts. Automakers are continuously upgrading their auto parts and accessories. Toyota, the world leader in hybrid manufacture is entertaining more innovations. Auto parts like Volvo and Ford engines are also showing different levels of sophistication. Hence, GM, as the leader in the field must be cautious about the mounting competition.

Commercial Trucks are highly practical are secure for the road because they are mainly manufactured to securely carry loads on a long distances and quality is always improving. A truck can be cheap but it all depends on the goods you want to transport, their importance, their quantity and the distance on which the truck has to go. They work on gasoline engines , for those for light medium duty, four stroke turbo intercooler diesel engines or V12 two stroke diesel engines for huge trucks. These are locomotive-type engines. The transmission is preferred to be automatic or semiautomatic, with gears from 5 to 12. This lowers fuel consumption and the truck’s durability is considerably enhanced.
Drivers, as well, prefer automatic or semiautomatic transmission because it offers them better capacity to concentrate on the road, giving their long trips. The top largest manufacturers of trucks in Europe, United States and Japan are Daimler Chrysler, Volvo , Man , Nissan , Scania , Iveco and Volkswagen among others. The cost of insurance for a used truck depends on the trucking operations, driving history and the region and it can reach a million dollars. The focus is the cargo being transported and its value – this raises or lowers he risk and loses, thus changing the cost of insurance.
Commercial trucks are relatively basic but there can be a wide variety of choices if you look into it. If you don’t know where to start you can lead your way by opting for a certain automaker and continue with your other needs. The inside has to be spacious, the engine has to suit your habitudes; you need to consider immediate or future towing needs and, of course, last but not least, your budge possibilities. You could be willing to pay more for a truck if intend on investing by using it for larger transport for a firm or company.
